West Texas Dust Storm

I felt like a severe weather reporter when I was painting this. I experienced my first real dust storm while visiting my aunt near Midland, TX. She warned me ahead of time that I was coming during the windy season, but I didn't know what I was in for until I saw firsthand. I thought it would be fun to go out during wind gusts of up to 65 mph and let the wind carry the paint across my page.

The red color is a mixture of the red sandy dirt that's pervasive in this area, and some added browns and brick colors from my palette. I had to pre-mix the paint indoors so that it wouldn't blow out of my palette on the short walk from the back door to the patio table where I taped down the page. The resulting piece is abstract, but it maintains surprising accuracy to the hazy atmosphere! The way it all blurs together with specks of dirt jumping out at the eye are exactly what it felt like to try and keep my eyes open out there in the elements.
